In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ACPICA: Enhance buffer validation in acpi_ut_walk_aml_resources() Enhance buffer validation in acpi_ut_walk_aml_resources() to prevent buffer overflows.

02

Engine v0.6.0

Risk summary

A buffer over-read in the kernel's ACPI AML resource parser allows malformed ACPI tables to cause out-of-bounds reads of kernel memory. An attacker who can supply or override ACPI tables—via firmware modification (physical access) or ACPI table override mechanisms (root with reboot)—can trigger the bug, potentially leaking kernel memory or crashing the system. Products with verified boot chains are protected against tampered table injection.

Vulnerability analysis

The kernel's ACPI resource parser did not check that enough data remained in a buffer before reading resource descriptors, and it did not verify that a descriptor's claimed size fit within the buffer. A crafted ACPI table with malformed resource entries could therefore cause the kernel to read past the end of the allocated memory, leaking kernel data or crashing the system. The fix adds checks that ensure the parser validates remaining space before accessing descriptor headers and confirms each descriptor fits inside the buffer before continuing. The bug is triggered when the kernel parses ACPI resource templates supplied by firmware or loaded through table overrides by a privileged user.
