01

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: f2fs: validate inline dentry name lengths before conversion Inline dentry conversion copies names out of the inline dentry area before checking that each recorded name length fits in the available filename slots. A corrupted image can therefore make the conversion path read past the inline filename storage while building the regular dentry block. Validate each inline dentry name length against the inline filename area before copying it.

Engine v0.6.0

Risk summary

A corrupted f2fs filesystem image can cause the kernel to read past the end of inline directory entry filename storage when converting inline entries to regular dentry blocks. This leaks adjacent kernel memory and can potentially crash the system. The vulnerability is reached by mounting a crafted f2fs image, which requires root-level privileges or physical access to removable media.

Affectedfs/f2fs/inline.c (f2fs filesystem)

Vulnerability analysis

When converting inline directory entries to regular dentry blocks, the f2fs filesystem copies filename data from the inline storage area using a length read directly from the on-disk image without first checking that the filename fits within the available inline storage. A crafted f2fs image can therefore cause the kernel to read past the end of the inline filename storage, leaking adjacent kernel memory into the newly built dentry block and potentially crashing the system if the overread crosses a page boundary into unmapped memory. The fix adds a bounds check that validates each inline entry's name length against the available space, rejecting oversized entries before any data is copied. The vulnerable path is reached when mounting an f2fs filesystem image, which requires root-level privileges in the initial namespace or physical access to removable media that triggers an automount.
