smb OpenInfoData Corruption
CVE-2026-93801
CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H
KernelScan AI6.6MEDIUM
01Description
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: smb/client: zero-initialize stack-allocated cifs_open_info_data Stack-allocated cifs_open_info_data may contain random data. This can make some fields have wrong value if they are not set later.
02KernelScan AI Analysis
Risk summary
Local users accessing a mounted CIFS/SMB share can trigger use of uninitialized kernel stack data, potentially causing kernel crashes or limited memory corruption. The vulnerability requires a CIFS share to be mounted (an administrator operation) but no special privileges to then trigger through normal file operations. A malicious SMB server could also influence which code paths are taken, causing certain fields to remain unset.
Vulnerability analysis
The SMB client filesystem code allocates a data structure on the kernel stack without clearing it first, so fields that the code does not explicitly set afterward retain whatever random values happened to be in that stack memory. Depending on which fields are left unset and how they are used, this can cause the client to operate on garbage pointer or length values, potentially leading to a kernel crash or memory corruption. The fix zero-initializes the structure at allocation time so that any field not explicitly set defaults to zero. The vulnerable code paths are reached when a local user performs file operations such as querying symlinks, setting file attributes, or creating special files on a mounted CIFS/SMB share, which requires an administrator to have mounted the share but no special privileges to then access it.
