This happens when the request token is still reachable via the virtqueue, but virtio_pmem_flush() returns and frees it. Fix the token lifetime by refcounting struct virtio_pmem_request. virtio_pmem_flush() holds a submitter reference, and the virtqueue holds an extra reference once the request is queued. The completion path drops the virtqueue reference, and the submitter drops its reference before returning.

Engine v0.6.0

Risk summary

A use-after-free in the virtio-pmem driver allows an unprivileged guest user to trigger memory corruption by racing the flush completion interrupt handler against the submitting thread's cleanup. The bug requires a guest VM configured with a virtio-pmem device and a DAX-mounted filesystem. Successful exploitation could lead to kernel code execution or denial of service within the guest.

Affecteddrivers/nvdimm/nd_virtio.c (virtio-pmem)

Vulnerability analysis

In the virtio-pmem driver, when a guest performs a flush on a DAX-mounted persistent memory device, the object submitted to the device can be freed by the submitting thread before the interrupt completion handler finishes accessing it. The completion handler runs in interrupt context and wakes the submitter, who then immediately frees the object while the handler is still using it on another CPU. The fix adds reference counting so that the object remains alive until both the submitter and the completion path have each finished with it. This vulnerability is reachable from within a guest VM that has a virtio-pmem device configured, by an unprivileged user performing filesystem flush operations on a DAX-mounted pmem device.
