In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: RDMA/hfi1: Propagate sdma_txinit_ahg() errors set_txreq_header_ahg() ignores the return value of sdma_txinit_ahg(). If sdma_txinit_ahg() fails, it returns before initializing tx->txreq. However, set_txreq_header_ahg() ignores the error and returns the AHG change count, causing the caller to continue processing the request as though initialization had succeeded. Propagate sdma_txinit_ahg() failures to the caller and abort request processing when initialization fails. Found by Linux Verification Center (linuxtesting.org) with SVACE.

Risk summary

A local user with access to an HFI1 InfiniBand device can trigger a code path where a transmit request structure is used without initialization, leading to kernel crashes or potential stale-data disclosure. The vulnerability requires specific Intel Omni-Path hardware and local device access. Systems without HFI1 hardware are unaffected.

Affecteddrivers/infiniband/hw/hfi1/user_sdma.c (RDMA/hfi1)

Vulnerability analysis

In the HFI1 InfiniBand driver's user SDMA path, the function that sets up a transmit request with Adaptive Header Generation ignores the return value of the SDMA initialization call. When that initialization fails (for example under memory pressure), the transmit request structure is left uninitialized, but the function returns a success-like value and the caller continues processing the request as though initialization had succeeded. The SDMA engine then operates on the uninitialized structure, which can cause a kernel crash or expose stale slab data. The fix captures the initialization return value and propagates the error to the caller so that request processing is aborted when initialization fails. This path is reachable by local users who have access to the HFI1 character device, which requires Intel Omni-Path fabric hardware to be present on the system.
