In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/panthor: fix firmware control interface bounds checks panthor_init_cs_iface() and panthor_init_csg_iface() validate firmware control interface offsets with 32-bit arithmetic and the size of the host wrapper structures. The offsets are derived from firmware-provided strides, so the arithmetic can wrap before the bounds check, and the host wrapper size is not the size of the firmware control interface being mapped. Use 64-bit arithmetic for the computed offsets and validate against the actual firmware control interface structure sizes with subtraction-based bounds checks. Also validate that the shared section is large enough for the global control interface before using it.

Risk summary

Systems equipped with Panthor (ARM Mali CSF) GPUs are at risk of kernel memory corruption due to insufficient validation of firmware-provided stride values used to compute control interface offsets. An attacker who can influence these values could trigger out-of-bounds access to kernel memory, potentially leading to privilege escalation or denial of service. The vulnerability requires local access to a system with the Panthor GPU driver loaded.

Vulnerability analysis

The Panthor GPU driver computes offsets into a shared memory section using stride values provided by the GPU firmware. These offset calculations used 32-bit arithmetic that could wrap around, producing a small value that passes the bounds check while the actual memory access lands outside the shared section. The bounds checks also validated against the size of the host-side wrapper structure rather than the firmware control interface structure being mapped, and the global control interface was used without first verifying the shared section was large enough to contain it. The fix switches to 64-bit arithmetic for offset computation to prevent overflow, validates against the actual firmware control interface structure sizes using subtraction-based checks that avoid underflow, and adds a missing size check for the global control interface before it is mapped. This vulnerability affects systems with a Panthor (ARM Mali CSF) GPU and requires local access to the GPU device; the firmware must provide unexpected stride values for the bug to manifest.
