01

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: tools/power/x86/intel-speed-select: Harden daemon pidfile open Avoid symlink-based pidfile clobbering by opening the pidfile with O_NOFOLLOW and validating it with fstat() before locking/writing. The daemon currently uses a fixed pidfile path under /tmp. A local unprivileged user can pre-create a symlink at that path and cause a root-run daemon instance to write into an attacker-chosen file.

Engine v0.6.0

Risk summary

A local unprivileged user can create a symlink at the fixed pidfile path used by the intel-speed-select daemon (under /tmp) to redirect the daemon's PID write to an arbitrary file. Because the daemon runs as root, this enables corruption of any file on the system with root privileges. Systems running the intel-speed-select tool in out-of-band daemon mode on Intel hardware with Speed Select Technology are affected.

Vulnerability analysis

The intel-speed-select daemon writes its process ID to a fixed path under /tmp when starting in out-of-band mode. Because the open does not block symbolic links, a local unprivileged user can pre-create a symlink at that path pointing to any file on the system. When the root-run daemon later opens its pidfile, it follows the symlink and writes its process ID into the attacker-chosen target, corrupting that file with root privileges. The fix blocks symbolic links when opening the pidfile and verifies that the opened object is a regular file before proceeding, aborting if a symlink is encountered. Any local unprivileged user can trigger this on a system where the daemon is started in out-of-band mode, and the hardware must support Intel Speed Select Technology.
